Getting Your Child Into The Swing of Child
Car Seat Safety
Parents who have been there will tell you that practicing good child
car seat safety is a lot easier if the kids are on board with the
program. Here are some suggestions that may help your infant get
used to using the car seat, and even begin to look forward to
climbing into the seat.
One of the most important aspects is to make sure the car seat is
comfortable. A seat with thin padding and sharp edges will not prove
to be inviting. Make sure that the child seat you choose is one that
will allow your child to feel as if he or she is riding in luxury.
Clean lines, no sharp jabs, and a comfortable seat and back will go
a long way toward helping your child learn to associate the chair
with being comfortable, not feeling trapped.
Next, listen to your child's cues when learning to adjust the
restraints on the car seat. You want the fit to be snug, but not so
tight that that your child feels tied up. Watch for cues such as
fretfulness, a lot of squirming, or pulling at the restraints. One
way to make sure that the straps are not too tight is to make sure
you can insert two fingers between the straps and your child's chest
without any trouble. Getting your child to participate in child car
seat safety is much easier if he or she feels comfortable in the
chair.
Last, associate riding in the car seat with something fun. Put some
music your child likes into the sound system. If possible, go by the
park or some other site that your child enjoys. If there is some
value add in the child's mind when it comes to riding in the seat,
he or she will be much more amiable to settling in when it is time
for a road trip. Involving your child in the development of good
child car seat safety habits will make the task much easier.
